An Integrative Counsellor draws on different therapeutic approaches rather than working from a single model of therapy. This allows counselling to be tailored to the unique needs, experiences and goals of each client.

What is the difference between a counsellor, therapist and psychotherapist?

Many people use the terms counsellor, therapist and psychotherapist interchangeably.

Counsellors tend to work with specific issues or life challenges such as anxiety, stress, bereavement, relationship difficulties, or low self-esteem.

Psychotherapists may undertake longer-term work that explores deeper emotional patterns, past experiences, and the impact these have on current relationships and wellbeing.

The term therapist is often used as an umbrella term that can include both counsellors and psychotherapists.

What's most important is not the title someone uses, but their training, experience, professional registration, and whether you feel safe and understood working with them.

What is the difference between counselling and therapy?

Counselling and therapy are closely related and many people use the terms interchangeably.

Counselling often focuses on helping you navigate current difficulties, make sense of challenging experiences, and develop coping strategies.

Therapy can include this too, while also exploring deeper patterns, emotions, relationships, and past experiences that may be affecting your life today.

In practice, there is often significant overlap between counselling and therapy. Both provide a confidential, supportive space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with a trained professional.

The most important factor is finding an approach and a therapist that feels right for you
